What Should I Give My Pet to Chew?
Our dogs are impressively equipped with teeth that are reminders of their wild heritage. Recreational chewing can be an important way to keep the teeth free of plaque and tartar. The choice of appropriate chew toys will help keep your dog occupied as he cleans his teeth.
Chew Items Should Be Chosen Carefully. The basic rule-of-thumb is that a dog should only be allowed to chew on items that cannot be chewed into pieces (unless the pieces are digestable) and should not be so hard that they can fracture a pet's teeth (if you don't want it to whack your knee, it's too hard). You should always supervise your dog when given a chew toy to prevent choking or other accidents. Some typical chew objects are summarized below.
CET Chews are rawhide or vegetable-based chews coated with the same enzymes found in CET Enzymatic Toothpaste. As the
dog chews the rawhide, the enzymes are released to clean the teeth. CET also makes chews for cats! We carry a variety of CET chew products at our hospital.
Kong Toys are rubber beehive-shaped chew toys that are virtually indestructible, and they are hollow inside. Packing some food treats inside the Kong Toy makes the ideal entertainment for the dog that wants an interesting, long-lasting chew item.
Greenies are digestible chew treats shaped like a big green toothbrush, and they are great for maintaining clean teeth and fresh breath. They have a hard, slightly rubbery consistency and a taste dogs love. Greenies also makes treats for cats!
